Your Guide for Online Coding Bootcamps

Software engineering pays better than almost any other field a career-changer can enter without a graduate degree. The median software developer earns $135,980, and the occupation is projected to grow 15% between 2024 and 2034 against 3% for all occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, and Employment Projections, 2024–34; retrieved July 2026).

That is the case for a coding bootcamp, and it is real.

Here is the case against it, and it is also real. Since late 2022, employment of software developers aged 22 to 25 has fallen by roughly 20% from its peak, while employment for their older colleagues in the same occupation held steady or grew (Brynjolfsson, Chandar and Chen, "Canaries in the Coal Mine?", Stanford Digital Economy Lab, 2025; retrieved July 2026). The finding uses payroll records from ADP covering millions of workers, and it survives excluding technology companies and excluding jobs that can be done remotely — so it is not simply the tech layoffs, and it is not simply a hiring freeze at a few large employers.

Both of these things are true at once, and reconciling them is the most important thing this guide can do for you. The occupation is large, well paid, and growing. The entry door to it has narrowed sharply. Those are not contradictory statements, and a guide that reports only the first one is not being straight with you.

This page covers what bootcamps teach, what the jobs actually pay, which programs still exist, what they cost, and — the part that matters most right now — how to think honestly about whether this is the right moment for you.

What Do Software Engineers Earn?

Look at the 10th percentile: $82,460. Even the bottom of this occupation pays substantially more than the median American worker in any job, which is $50,980. That is unusual, and it is why so many people want in.

But note what the percentile table describes: people who already have the job. A wage distribution is a photograph of incumbents. It tells you what the occupation pays. It tells you nothing about your odds of joining it, and right now those two questions have very different answers.

Software engineer, web developer, or programmer? The distinction is worth $43,000.

"Coding" is not one occupation, and the differences are larger than most bootcamp marketing implies:

Three things jump out of that table.

Software developer is the target. It is the largest computing occupation by a wide margin — 1.69 million people — the best paid of the individual-contributor coding roles, and it has by far the most annual openings, about 129,200 a year across software developers, QA analysts and testers combined (BLS, Employment Projections, 2024–34).

Web developer is a much smaller and lower-paying occupation than people assume. 70,190 workers and a median of $92,650 — roughly $43,000 below software developers. Many bootcamps teach web development and market it as software engineering. Those are not the same destination, and a graduate who lands in the second occupation rather than the first has had a meaningfully different outcome.

Computer programmer is shrinking. Projected to decline 6% through 2034, with only about 5,500 openings a year, all of them from people leaving rather than positions being created (BLS, Employment Projections, 2024–34). The narrow job of writing code to someone else's specification is the part of this field most exposed to automation, and the federal projections already reflect that.

The Entry-Level Problem

This is the section other guides do not have, and you should read it before you spend a dollar.

Research from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, using ADP payroll records, finds that employment of software developers aged 22 to 25 fell by roughly 20% from its late-2022 peak, while employment among older developers in the same occupation was flat or rising (Brynjolfsson, Chandar and Chen, "Canaries in the Coal Mine?", Stanford Digital Economy Lab, 2025; retrieved July 2026). Software development is not an incidental example in that research — it is the headline case.

Three details matter for how much weight to put on it:

  • The adjustment is happening through hiring, not pay. Wages for employed developers have not collapsed; the number of junior people being hired has. That is exactly why the BLS wage table above still looks excellent, and why it is not the reassurance it appears to be.
  • The effect is concentrated where AI automates rather than assists. Writing straightforward code to a clear specification — the classic junior task, and the thing bootcamps are best at teaching — is squarely in the automated category.
  • It is not just the tech layoffs. The result holds after excluding technology firms and excluding remote-friendly roles.

What this does not mean. It does not mean software engineering is a dead career; the occupation is projected to add jobs and pays extremely well. It does not mean nobody is hired out of a bootcamp; people are. And ten-year projections could turn out to be right — BLS still forecasts 15% growth, and previous technology transitions eventually produced more employment, not less.

What it does mean. The specific bet a coding bootcamp asks you to make — pay $10,000–$18,000, spend six to twelve months, and enter at the junior level — is being made into the weakest junior market in the field's modern history. That is not a reason to never do it. It is a reason to be honest about the odds, to demand far more evidence from schools than you would have needed five years ago, and to think hard about whether you have something that differentiates you from the very large number of people making the same bet.

What Will You Learn in a Coding Bootcamp?

A credible full-stack program covers most of the following. They are listed in roughly the order that employers screen for them.

  • A programming language, deeply. Usually JavaScript, sometimes Python. Depth beats breadth: one language you can actually think in is worth more than four you have seen.
  • Data structures, algorithms, and computer science fundamentals. This is the difference between a program that prepares you for technical interviews and one that does not. Technical interviews still test this, and no amount of framework knowledge substitutes.
  • Front-end development. HTML, CSS, and a modern framework — React dominates.
  • Back-end development. Server-side code, APIs, and how a request actually travels through a system. Node.js is common in JavaScript-based programs.
  • Databases. SQL, schema design, and querying. Universal and non-negotiable.
  • Version control and collaboration. Git, branching, pull requests, code review. You will be judged on this from your first day of work.
  • Testing and debugging. Reading a stack trace, writing a test, and finding a fault in code you did not write. Underrated by students, heavily valued by employers.
  • Deployment and the basics of production. Getting an application onto the internet and keeping it running. Cloud fundamentals help.
  • Working with AI coding tools — and working without them. Fluency with AI assistants is now assumed. So is the ability to read, debug, and take responsibility for code you did not write yourself. A program that lets you generate your way through the curriculum is training you for the exact tasks that are disappearing.
  • A portfolio of real projects. Something built, deployed, and explicable. In a tight junior market, this is the only artifact that separates you from a résumé.

What About Mobile Development?

If you came here looking for a mobile development bootcamp, the useful answer is that mobile development is a specialization within software engineering, not a separate career — and you should plan accordingly.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track mobile developers as an occupation. People who build iOS and Android apps are counted as software developers (SOC 15-1252), the same occupation covered throughout this guide, with a median wage of $135,980 (BLS, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025; retrieved July 2026). Their pay, their outlook, and — importantly — the entry-level contraction described above all apply to mobile developers exactly as they apply to any other software engineer. Mobile is not a side door into the field. It is a room inside it.

This shapes how you should shop. Dedicated career-change mobile bootcamps have largely disappeared; the major providers now teach mobile as a module inside a general software engineering program rather than as a standalone track. That is not a loss. A general program that gives you the fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, version control, testing, deployment — plus a mobile specialization is a better foundation than a program that teaches only how to ship one kind of app, because it leaves you employable in more than one direction.

The current mobile stack

If you are evaluating any program's mobile content, this is what it should be teaching:

  • iOS: Swift, SwiftUI, and Xcode. Objective-C still exists in older codebases, but it is not where a beginner starts.
  • Android: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Android Studio. Kotlin is the modern default; Java remains in legacy code.
  • Cross-platform: React Native and Flutter, which let one codebase target both platforms. Widely used, especially at startups and for smaller teams.
  • The rest of the job: APIs and networking, local data storage, app architecture, testing, and the app store review and release process. Shipping an app is a distinct skill from writing one.

A curriculum still centered on Objective-C, or teaching Android in Eclipse rather than Android Studio, is teaching a stack the industry moved on from.

iOS or Android — and does it matter?

Less than people fear. Pick based on what you can test on easily, what the employers in your target market are hiring for, and which you find more interesting. The fundamentals transfer, and switching platforms later is a matter of weeks, not years. It is not a decision that locks your career.

If you specifically want mobile

Two realistic routes. Take a general software engineering bootcamp and specialize afterward, which is the more employable path and the one most people should take. Or take a focused skills bootcamp — Kodeco runs short, live iOS/Swift and Android/Kotlin programs taught by working developers. These are skill courses rather than career-change programs: no job guarantee, no placement service. Check enrollment status before you plan around one, as cohort availability in this niche is intermittent.

And whichever route you take, apply the same due diligence as for any coding bootcamp — including everything in the sections below.

What Coding Bootcamps Are Available?

Two things to know before the list.

The category has consolidated sharply. Programs that ranked in every guide a few years ago are no longer enrolling. Some closed; some were absorbed; some quietly stopped running cohorts while their websites stayed up. Check that a program has real, upcoming start dates before you get attached to it.

Some have renamed rather than closed. Coding programs are being rebranded as AI engineering programs, and old pages often remain live because they still rank in search. Read the enrollment page, not the landing page.

Career-change bootcamps

Flatiron School — Software Engineering. Full-time and flexible pacing, online and on campus. Flatiron has also introduced work-integrated tracks that place students in a paid apprenticeship starting around month five, running roughly 19 months in total — a genuinely different model, and one that responds directly to the junior-hiring problem by manufacturing the experience employers now demand. TripleTen — AI Software Engineering. $9,800, part-time and fully online, no prerequisites, with a conditional money-back guarantee: a relevant job within ten months of graduation or a full tuition refund, provided you complete the career services program, apply actively, stay in contact with a coach, and are a U.S. resident (TripleTen program pages; retrieved July 2026). Codesmith. Full-time and part-time full-stack JavaScript and computer science, in New York and online, explicitly aimed at preparing students for mid-level engineering roles rather than entry-level ones. That positioning is worth understanding: it targets people who already have some technical background. Verify current tuition and admissions requirements directly.

4Geeks Academy. Software engineering, machine learning, and cybersecurity, online and at campuses including Florida, with small cohorts and long-run career support. Verify current tuition directly.

Springboard — Software Engineering Career Track. Part-time, online, mentor-led, with a conditional job guarantee for graduates authorized to work in the U.S. or Canada. Verify tuition and prerequisites directly.

App Academy. Full-time and part-time software engineering. Verify current tuition and availability directly.

No longer running a software engineering immersive: General Assembly. Its catalog is now short AI-branded courses — front-end with HTML and CSS, back-end with JavaScript, building AI web applications — sold individually or bundled into a pathway (General Assembly course catalog; retrieved July 2026). These are useful for a working professional adding a skill. They are not a career-change program.

Mastery-based and subscription programs

Launch School. A subscription-based, mastery-oriented program with no fixed length: you advance by demonstrating competence rather than by completing weeks. It takes longer than a bootcamp — often considerably longer — and costs far less per month. For a self-directed person who would rather be slow and solid than fast and shaky, this model has a real argument in its favor, and it is a better fit for the current market than most twelve-week immersives.

Free and low-cost paths

Take these seriously. In a market this tight, the argument for spending $15,000 before you know whether you can code — and whether you enjoy it — is weaker than it has ever been.

freeCodeCamp and The Odin Project are free, comprehensive, and used by an enormous number of working developers as their actual entry point. They give you no cohort, no mentor, and no career services. They also give you no debt, and they will tell you within a month whether you want to do this for a living.

Start here. If you finish a substantial project and still want more, you will approach a paid program knowing exactly what you are buying — and you will be a better candidate for it.

Where a cell says "verify with the school," it is because the numbers circulating on comparison and affiliate sites disagree with each other, and where they could be checked against a provider's own page, the provider contradicted them. A wrong price is worse than an absent one.

The range on this table is the argument. The gap between free and $18,000 is not a gap in information — the information is free, and it is good. What money buys is structure, feedback, a cohort, and career services. Those are real. Whether they are worth five figures in the current junior market is a genuinely open question, and anyone who tells you the answer is obvious is selling something.

Federal Grant Money Now Covers Short Programs

This is new — it took effect on 1 July 2026 — and almost no bootcamp guide has caught up with it.

Workforce Pell Grants extend federal Pell funding to short-term training for the first time in the program's history. Eligible programs run 150 to 599 clock hours over at least 8 and fewer than 15 weeks. The maximum Pell award for 2026–27 is $7,395, prorated by program length (U.S. Department of Education, Workforce Pell Grant final rule fact sheet, May 2026; retrieved July 2026).

You can hold a bachelor's degree and still qualify. A bachelor's normally makes you Pell-ineligible; under Workforce Pell it does not. That provision is written into the rule, and it describes the typical career changer precisely. A graduate credential does disqualify you.

And the accountability standards are the strongest consumer protection this market has ever had. To keep eligibility, a program must, every year:

  • Graduate 70% of participants within 150% of normal completion time;
  • Have 70% of completers employed in the second quarter after they exit; and
  • Keep total published tuition and fees at or below its graduates' "value-added earnings" — the median earnings of working completers, less 150% of the federal poverty guideline.

Fail any of these and the program loses eligibility, with a two-year waiting period before it can try to regain it — during which it cannot launch a substantially similar program.

Set that against what a federal regulator found at BloomTech: advertised placement as high as 86%, internal figures nearer 50%, and as low as 30% in some cohorts. Under Workforce Pell, a 50% placement rate strips a program of its funding.

So ask every school one question before any other: "Is this program approved for Workforce Pell?" If the answer is yes, the program has cleared a federal outcomes screen — the Governor's approval, the Secretary's approval, and annual 70/70 thresholds. That is a bar no bootcamp's own marketing has ever had to meet.

Two honest caveats. The program must be offered by an accredited institution participating in federal student aid — which most private bootcamps are not, though universities are. And few programs have completed approval yet: states are still building their frameworks, with the pipeline expected to fill over the next 12 to 18 months. Check your state's higher education agency for the approved-program list rather than relying on a school's admissions office, and file the FAFSA early.

And check WIOA as well. Every state maintains an Eligible Training Provider List for federal workforce funding. If you are unemployed, underemployed, dislocated from a job, or low income, public money may cover your tuition through that route too. Your state workforce agency can tell you what you qualify for.

Are Coding Bootcamps Worth It?

Not for most people, right now, starting from zero. That is a harder answer than this question usually gets, and the reason is on this page: a bootcamp's core promise — take a beginner, produce a junior software engineer, in months — collides with a junior market that has contracted roughly 20% for the youngest cohort of developers.

It still makes sense in four specific situations:

  • You already have a technical or quantitative background, so you are not competing head-to-head with absolute beginners.
  • You are moving internally, where your employer is not screening you against a thousand strangers.
  • The program includes real work experience — a paid apprenticeship or genuine client project. In a market where employers want experience for entry-level roles, this attacks the actual bottleneck.
  • You have already learned to code for free and hit a real ceiling, so you know precisely what you are buying.

It probably does not if you are starting from zero, borrowing to pay, and counting on a job at the end — or if you are relying on a job guarantee you have not read the conditions on.

How to Choose a Coding Bootcamp

Start from the assumption that provider-reported outcomes are unreliable, because the federal government has proven that they can be.

In 2024, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau permanently banned BloomTech — formerly Lambda School — and its chief executive from consumer-lending activities after finding the school advertised job-placement rates as high as 86% when its actual internal rates were closer to 50%, and as low as 30% in some cohorts. Students borrowed money against the advertised numbers (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2024; retrieved July 2026).

That is not proof that every school lies. It is proof that you cannot tell from the outside, which puts the burden on the school. In the current market, the burden should be heavier than ever.

Ask this before anything else: is the program approved for Workforce Pell? If it is, it must annually graduate 70% of participants and place 70% of completers into jobs, or lose its federal funding. That is an outcomes bar no marketing claim can substitute for — and as of July 2026 it is the single most informative question available to you.

The thing no school can give you

There is no reliable, independent data on what coding bootcamp graduates earn or how many get hired. No federal agency tracks bootcamp graduates as a group. Every placement rate you see is either self-reported or lifted from a market benchmark, and the one time a regulator looked closely at a major school's numbers, it found them inflated by a factor of nearly two.

What is verifiable is the occupation: software developers earn a median of $135,980, with a 10th percentile of $82,460 and a 90th of $214,670 (BLS, OEWS, May 2025; retrieved July 2026). That is what the job pays. Whether you get the job depends on what you bring, what you build, and a junior market that no school controls — and that, at the moment, has contracted about 20% for the youngest developers in it.

Any program that tells you otherwise is quoting its own marketing.
